Interview with a blogger: Deidre Woollard

Deidre WoollardIn today's blogger interview we find out what keeps Deidre Woollard blogging at breakneck pace on Luxist and Slashfood:

How has it been working at WIN?

It's a lot of fun. There is so much enthusiasm for various subjects and blogging in general. I am an information junkie and I love that we cover so many different subjects so well. The pace is also exciting. I used to work on magazines where everything had to be done months in advance. At WIN, change can happen so quickly. Blogging is such a flexible medium that we can work with our audience and each other to constantly create a better and more entertaining product. It's a bit like cooking, you can tinker and test until you get it right. With so many jobs you have to fit yourself inside a mold, WIN is the opposite, you get to create your work and you are responsible for yourself. I think that is one of the reasons that WIN bloggers are such a creative group is that this kind of paradigm welcomes those who are interested in working on their own terms.

When did you first start blogging and why?

I started blogging a few years ago when I lived in a remote town of 300 people in Northern California. At first it was just a way of keeping myself entertained and engaged in the world at large. I had websites before but I liked the blog format as a daily notepad of my obsessions to share with everyone and found that it was much easier to just post on my blog about some book I loved or a cool website I saw than send a bunch of friends quick emails. Also I was writing a novel at that point and it was a good break to jolt myself back into the short form.

When did you join Weblogs, Inc.?

I met Jason in the summer of 2004 and started working on Luxist in the fall of 2004 for its launch in December. I was immediately inspired by Jason's megawatt energy and it's amazing how fast the company has expanded. And now the general public knows what a blog is which means my mother doesn't think I've made up an imaginary occupation.

What keeps you inspired about blogging?

I think the thing that keeps me into blogging is that I am constantly finding new things I want to talk about or show to someone else. Blogs and the web in general have led me to so many of the things that I am fascinated by whether it's new authors, foods I haven't tried yet or places I long to visit. One of the things I have enjoyed best about working on Luxist is finding small companies that are making amazing products and highlighting them. The web makes everyone and everything accessible. Someone who is making unique jewelry in a tiny town in Oregon can have a worldwide following.

What do you do outside of blogging?

So many projects... I write fiction, am working on a tarot deck, and want to create an artists' colony in the California desert.
