Weblogs, Inc. is a blog company run by bloggers for bloggers; as such we're committed to keeping blogging authentic and honest. We want our readers to trust our blogs, so we've committed to the following:

  • There is a clear separation between advertising and editorial on all WIN blogs. Our bloggers are not involved in the advertising process. In fact, our bloggers find out who's advertising on our blogs at the same time as the audience!
  • Bloggers do not receive free products or services from the companies they write about.
  • Bloggers do accept review units (i.e., a new cell phone at Engadget, a video game at Joystiq, or a week-long car loan at Autoblog); however, when they're finished reviewing products, they return these items to the manufacturers. If the manufacturers do not take the items back, we give them to our readers. This is the same editorial policy as the New York Times or Wall Street Journal.
  • Bloggers do not accept "junkets" from vendors. Junkets are free trips that PR firms and the companies they represent provide to journalists in the hopes of getting favorable reviews for their products. Our bloggers routinely get offers of first class tickets and four-star hotels at amazing destinations we NEVER accept them! If we go to an industry event you can be sure that we've picked up the cost of the tickets and that we suffered in coach in order to maintain our integrity.
  • If we get something wrong, we correct the error immediately.
  • Bloggers are committed to being up front and honest. Their opinions are their own, and if you don't agree with them, feel free to post a comment!

Blogging Stocks liveblogging is investor gold

Get your fresh hot Wal-Mart here! Stock blogger Brian White just finished liveblogging Wal-Mart Chief Financial Officer Tom Schoewe's talk at the Lehman retail investor seminar. Why listen to a webcast when you can get the gist straight from our bloggers' mouths? This Blogging Stocks thing is great (if I do say so myself).

Just last week, I liveblogged Microsoft's earnings call. Tomorrow, we'll be heading to Time Warner land for some real-time reviews of their earnings release, and next Thursday, it's all Google Shareholder meeting, all the time. Stay tune for our live bloggers and you can be more informed on whether to hit the "buy" or "sell" button while other investors are still waiting for the download.

Coffee will show them you're right

coffee by sarah gilbertGot coffee? If you're in an argument, you'd better have the fully caffeinated kind - and serve some to your argue-ee. Nicole Weston at Slashfood points to a new study which gives evidence that consuming caffeine makes you more receptive to a convincing argument.

And, if you've had your coffee today, you'll realize that the researchers are so right.

How we celebrated Earth Day

earth day from willy volk at divesterI woke up the morning of Earth Day, walked to my nearest local coffee shop with my boys (while talking to them about saving the planet, of course), and drank organic coffee and ate scones baked in a nearby kitchen. While I patted myself on the back for my friendliness to mama earth, I pulled up an email from Divester's Willy Volk about his Earth Day celebration.

By the time I took my third sip of coffee, Willy and his wife had already cleaned up a whole beach (FIVE bags of garbage!) and blogged about it. They weren't the only ones out-celebrating me. Nicole Weston at Slashfood told us how to grocery shop for good (hint: canvas bags are superior to reusing your paper ones); Tokyo is on a campaign to get restaurants to donate vegetable oil for biodiesel; Brad Pitt is fighting to make New Orleans greener; and (don't forget) Autoblog launched an environmentally-friendly spinoff, Autoblog Green.

AutoblogGreen: saving the planet one post at a time

autoblog greenAh! You can all breathe deeper, now, thanks to Autoblog's new spinoff, AutoblogGreen. Whether you're interested in a hybrid Vespa or you'd like to investigate the many possibilities of vegetable oil-powered vehicles (even: biodiesel for the lazy man thanks to Oregon State University), or you just want to know what you're going to do about rising gasoline prices, AutoblogGreen is here for you.

This brilliant effort by Autoblog's John Neff and Chris Paukert is staffed by brand-new lead Sebastian Blanco and the writing talents of Bruno Vanzieleghem, Cheryl Morrissette, and the rest of the Autoblog team.

Manhattan is paddle-rific from Swindburne Island

That's all I need to say, isn't it? This photo, taken by Erik Olsen of Gadling, is just one highlight of his recent kayak trip from New York City to tiny Swindburne Island. He reports that the trip, hosted by Manhattan Kayak Company, was cold but lovely. I can just feel the paddle in my hands, feel that cold salt wind at my back... can't you?

New York Auto Show goodies: BMW 3-series is best car *ever*

bmw
3-seriesI know I raved about the car of my girlhood dreams, the Nissan Altima, and its sexy new look for 2007. But if there's a car I'd rather drive, it's the BMW. My long-ago ex-boyfriend owned a 1999 323, and driving that machine was truly one of the great joys of my life (and, certainly, a major highlight of that relationship).

I'm not the only one who loves to love the BMW 3-series. The car was named the 2006 World Car of the Year by the Midway Group at the New York Auto Show. Check out Autoblog all weekend long, live from the New York Auto Show with news, highlights and reviews of new models. A deja-vu PreVue? A very, very dirty Jeep Wrangler? 85 triple-parked Tahoes? See all the sights through our eyes.

Kentucky bourbon, for good, at this year's Derby

photo of the mint
julep from woodland reserveDuring the Kentucky Derby May 6, the first 50 moneyed racegoers to lay down a cool grand will be sipping mint juleps for charity. $1000 mint juleps in gold-plated cups sipped through silver straws, that is.

We've covered the pricey cocktail bit at length on Slashfood, but this is the first time I've heard of a libation that wasn't just about conspicuous consumption - this one is for charity! So while you're starting your buzz, you can think about how it's helping those poor retired racehorses. Drinking for good.

In related news, houseplants also benefit from a little Kentucky bourbon! (or Russian vodka or Mexican tequila or whatever your favorite international liquor.) Bourbon is good for all kinds of flora and fauna today. Whaddya know.

Sneak peeks for the New York Auto Show

Of course, we'll be at the New York Auto Show starting this weekend. But in the meantime we've been getting tips from all over netdom about the new, soon-to-be-revealed 2007 models. My fave pics are of the 2007 Nissan Altima: the Altima was my first car (I'd just graduated from college, and it was red) and I'm even more in love with the 2007 model than I ever was with my 1995.

Check out the 2007 Altima and then keep watching for more internet sleuthing. I wonder what we'll see next? Maybe an Infiniti...

Is that an EVO-powered Jetta, or is there a hippy in your trunk?

vegetable oil to power your jettaI've been fascinated by biodiesel and other vegetable-oil-powered vehicles lately, as it's all the rage in my hometown of Portland, Ore. and my favorite fast food chain, Burgerville, just recently announced that all their frier oil was headed to a biodiesel future. Oh yes: and my budget is seriously feeling the strain of near-$3-per-gallon prices for fossil fuels.

So it's no wonder I was fascinated by John Neff's detail of a ride in a SVO (straight vegetable oil)-powered Volkswagen Jetta. You can't purchase SVO-powered cars from major manufacturers, but must convert them on your own (or with the help of a green-thinking engine mechanic). Of course my favorite part was his description of the ride: "the experience was pleasantly ordinary. While the “Vega Jet” handles like there’s a hippy locked in the trunk due to the extra weight of the SVO tanks, acceleration and overall performance was on par with other diesel-powered Jettas we’ve driven." You'll also love the photos of the vegetable oil, pre- and post-filtering, as well as the Jetta owners' score: expired but unused vegetable oil for $1.50 a gallon.

Happy April Fooled

April Fools' Day was on a Saturday this year, and while bloggers around the network were busy creating foolish content, it seems as if folks are still catching up on the joke. (And, of course, some commenters are telling us that "April 1st jokes are so Web 1.0" - sorry man.)

Starting at the top, Jason Calacanis announced he was quitting AOL and joining Google - Chief Marketing Officer will be his new title. My favorite part: that Jeremy Zawodny will be the Director of Busting Chops. Congrats Jason & Jeremy!

At TUAW, the Apple bloggers just up and quit. Whoa, heavy stuff guys. I guess that's what the griefers get for, you know, griefin'. (Can you tell Sarah learned a new word this weekend?)

On TV Squad, the fool was up to the readers to discover. Hardworking Squadders "went" back in time to create a whole made-up storyline, and the first readers who uncovered the mysterious fraud, won.

Gadling lead blogger Erik Olsen invented the most brilliant faux-technology yet: the Infant Cone of Silence. While over at Blogging Baby, Larissa Brown was up to her own shenanigans with an equally-needed piece of next-generation technology for parents: the "Autoblogger" from Sony and Typepad. Oh, if it only were true!

One mendhi tattoo please, and hold the PPD!

the henna hand, she must not
include ppd!Henna is the darling of the hip multi-culti urbanite, and it appears everywhere from the traditional hand decoration to pregnant belly decorations at baby showers and blessing ways to booths at all the trendiest street fairs. I've long admired the Indian-flavored body decoration, and I'm certainly not alone. But now the Cancer Blog tells us that an ingredient in henna tattoos may cause cancer.

It's not the natural ingredients that are dangerous - hydroxynaphthaquinone, from leaves of the Lawsonia tree, is safe - but when it's combined with synthetic dye para-phenylenediamine (PPD), it's a toxic mix. PPD was labeled a possible carcinogen in 1979. Many henna artists use only natural ingredients, so check before you decorate.

Whoppers Robin's Eggs reviewed and other pop food goodies

interior
of a robin's eggI love Easter. Sure, I'm religious and it's such a nice melodramatic time of the year, bonnets and pastel-colored dresses and resurrection and all that. But my favorite part: Whoppers Robin's Egg candies, those delicious candy-coated malted milk balls. I could eat them all day long (she says, with lips stained pink, white and blue by the candy coatings). For Slashfood, Nicole Weston reviews the original and new "strawberry milkshake" flavors and finds them both equally wonderful in different ways.

In other pop food news on Slashfood today, Wrigley's is conducting a series of experiments on gum, some of which indicate that gum is good for you! No, it's not the next health food, but it is beneficial for concentration, they say.

Yachts: I want to know, you want to know, where to take them?

If you could find the answer to just one burning question, I think we can all agree it's this: where, oh where, should I take my yacht? Matthew Collins at Luxist has a nice rundown of the top yachting destinations in the world, from the ever-popular Ibiza on the Mediterranean (it's What Diana Would Do) to hidden gems like Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast and Labrador in the Canadian maritimes.

Bathing in beer in Eastern Europe

czech beer bathsI know you've been wondering, and wishing, and pining to find that perfect bubbly yeasty bathing medium - and oh yes, chocolate and champagne, they are yesterday's tub-fillers - well then. The Czech Republic has the destination for you.

At a Czech family brewery, a spa has been installed, and now you can benefit both from the effects of drinking beer and letting its hoppy froth massage your cellulite.

What could be better?
