The free-to-play model for online PC games seems to be working for some game developers. Earlier this week we reported that the change to such a model for Turbine's fantasy MMO Dungeons and Dragons Online has been a big success. Now Nexon America, which runs a number of similar games. has announced big percentage increases for revenues for its third quarter and September time periods

According to their press release, revenues for their third quarter (July-September) were higher by 36 percent. Revenues for September were up 44 percent. As usual, Nexon America did not reveal specific revenue numbers nor did they reveal if the company generated profits. Nexon America's launched the open beta for their next game, Dungeon Fighter Online, earlier this month and that will certainly generate even more money for the company.

In related news, Nexon announced that their FPS game Combat Arms will add a "casual server" called Foxtrot for new players. In addition new weapons, including a rocket launcher, are available for use in the game.

[via email press release]

If you are a fan of Nexon's free-to-play online games like Combat Arms and most recently Dungeon Fighter Online, you might have seen some weird animations show up on top of the Nexon.net web site this week. It's OK, you can go ahead and click on them. If you do they reveal some big changes in store for the Nexon.net site.

The biggest change is that Nexon.net will soon be no more. It will be replaced by Blockparty.com, a new site that will have a lot of Facebook-like social networking features. Yes you will still be able to access all of your Nexon games at the new site but you will also be able to do things like create a profile, message buddies and in general have more of an interactive experience with Nexon gamers even when you are not playing the games. There's no word on when Blockparty.com will go live.

Each week we find more and more free games that do not quite fit into the freeware mold. Games that do not require a subscription fee to play, but encourage player usage of money through microtransactions or special subscription services. This is Playing For Free, a column that showcases these games.

There are a lot of free-to-play action games out there. Some of them are great, and some of them are terrible. Then there are those that are great games but suffer from a poor community. Combat Arms falls into this category. It's a good shooter, if relatively rote, but it suffers from stats padding and hacking accusations. If you can find a good group to play with, you'll have an absolute blast. Just don't expect public games with strangers to be all that entertaining, thanks to getting booted all the time.

Erling Ellingsen, Director of Communications, Funcom:

"A bit surprising to me is that in terms of number of players, it hasn't changed a bit. Ultima Online, EverQuest and Age of Conan has roughly the same number of players per server -- which is quite interesting actually. These worlds have remained quite the same in size, so apart from EVE Online -- which is in a slightly different category because of their game world -- these games haven't become any more massive in terms of population and size of the game world. I'm still waiting for that super-MMO with 500,000 players, one billion square miles of fantasy world and a complex, virtual society filled with political intrigues and personal and social challenges.

"The truth is, however, that the size and scope of MMOs has remained relatively the same except for development in graphical technology. It's the same number of people playing, roughly the same size of the world, and we're doing the same things -- building houses, killing critters, leveling up and looking for loot. In many ways, the MMO genre is still in its infancy, and I am looking forward to more advanced MMOs in the future that really challenge the genre standards.

"We don't need [a new term for 'MMO'] yet, I think. We're still quite early in the MMO era, and I think some of the big changes are yet to come."

"By definition, MMO means that a game is massive, multiplayer and online. MMOs therefore provide an environment where one player is able to interact with many other players through a setting facilitated through an internet connection. ..

"Today, the term MMO is taking on a broader definition where character persistence combined with the ability to play with multiple people suffice (i.e. session-based MMOs like Combat Arms, and KartRider). MMOs have evolved to adopt multiple genres, and the gaming genre should now be attached like a suffix to "MMO" to fully describe the type of MMO a game is (e.g. MMORPG, MMORTS, MMOFPS). However, this starts to get confusing for many when one considers online versions of games like Texas Hold'em or Chess, where there are massive player bases that have high levels of engagement and some level of persistence. ...

"I believe the definition of MMOs has elevated to a point where it is bleeding to define games that simply have players that play with each other online. At Nexon, we have tossed the idea of calling our games 'connected games,' 'live games,' 'social games,' etc. However, at the end of the day, our goal is to grow truly massive player bases. The reality is that the majority of these massive player bases probably won't care about whatever we call our games, as long as they are fun and keep them enjoying the experience. Rather than thinking of new terms, I want us to focus our energies on creating great playing experiences with massive player bases to justify the existence of the terms that currently exist.

"When people outside the industry ask me what kind of games we work on, I simply say 'online games.' The frustrating result is that sometimes people respond with, 'I heard those poker games make a lot of money.' ... I would like people to call our games FFOs -- Fun Free Online games."

'MMO' has come to mean a specific kind of massively multiplayer game, as the short version of MMORPG rather as a general term for all massively multiplayer games (where MMORPG is a subset of MMO). You see the term 'virtual world' used now to describe massively multiplayer games that don't feature strong character progression or RPG elements. We classify Free Realms as a 'virtual world,' despite the game's light stats and character progression, because Free Realms emphasizes moment-to-moment fun over the grind to level 80.

"I think we'll see new terms evolve as the genres deepen and clarify. I would bet, for example, we start to see more sports MMOs, and then we start to see more specific kinds of sports MMOs. There will probably be an 'MMO' sports game, where you level up as a baseball player by playing baseball in the game, and there will probably be a 'virtual world' sports game, where you hang out, talk about your favorite teams, and have fantasy football in a virtual setting. It's such a new area in game development (which is itself a new field) that I think we have only just started to scratch the surface."

When the term was first used, it was narrowly defined to be a fantasy RPG game in the mold of Asheron's Call or EverQuest. Today MMOs are quite diverse and can be in a variety of genres and for a variety of audiences.

"[We] probably [need a new term for 'MMO']. But no one has come up with a term for it that is both appropriate and catchy enough. I think 'persistent online game' is the closest phrase that captures the essence of what MMOs are. To me a 'virtual world' specifically describes a shared online environment. You can have a virtual world that is not necessarily a game."

While the economy is still on shaky ground, the folks at Nexon America are apparently raking in the money from their many free-to-play online games. Last month the company announced that revenues from their games had increased 35 percent compared to the same time period a year ago. Now Gamasutra reports that Nexon America has told them their August revenue numbers were up 32 percent compared to the same time period a year ago.

Unfortunately, Nexon America has chosen not to give specific numbers for those revenue increases nor give out any profit numbers, although Gamasutra notes that Nexon's US sales were recorded as $30 million back in 2007. Nexon America supports a number of Asian-based online games such as MapleStory, Combat Arms, and Mabinogi in the US.

The fantasy MMO MapleStory has 6 million registered users in the US and in July Nexon said they had 70,000 concurrent users play the game at one time. The online FPS Combat Arms has 3 million registered US users and Nexon said they have seen "double digit growth" for the game over the past several months. They have also seen revenues go up for their other fantasy MMO Mabinogi. They are close to officially launching their next game in the US, the online fighting title Dungeon Fighter Online.

This is basically Combat Arms' entry into the apparently growing number of shooters with some kind of zombie action.

The mod features players on a new map, Operation Overdose, where players are picked randomly to play zombies or regular humans. Player zombies have melee attacks that they can use to turn the human team into zombies. Naturally the human players don't care for this whole "living dead" option and want to shoot the zombies down. However zombies have some advantages; they are highly resistant to bullets, moderately resistant to fire, explosions and melee attacks and completely immune to any poison attacks. Oh and critical hits? Not gonna do it to the undead.

The new update also adds some new weapons to the game including new shotguns, assault rifles and a new flamethrower.
Download HD Combat Arms 'Quarantine Mode' Trailer (430 MB)
Download the Combat Arms Install Client (752 MB)
Check out all Combat Arms downloads
%Gallery-69015%

The free-to-play online shooter, Combat Arms, will be jumping onto the zombie bandwagon with the all-new Quarantine Mode, expected to release by the end of the month. In Quarantine mode, players will be able to battle against each other as either humans or zombies. There are a few tactical lessons to be taken away from this trailer. 1. Low cut tops are inappropriate (but oh so right) for facing zombie hordes. 2. Do less staring and more shooting when your partner is pinned down by flesh eating zombies. 3. Next time, plant the bomb at the entrance. However, the big question is: Can you nut shot a zombie?

Download HD Combat Arms 'Quarantine Mode' Trailer (430 MB)
Download the Combat Arms Install Client (752 MB)
Check out all Combat Arms downloads
%Gallery-39501%

Nexon's free-to-play first person shooter Combat Arms celebrates its first anniversary of its US open beta launch this month and this week the company told us that players will get chanced to receive bonus experience points and more during special play periods in July. There will even be a photo contest this month with prizes that include limited edition "Nutshot" T-shirts (and yes we wanted another excuse to write "Nutshot" . . . is that wrong?).

Nexon also sent over some stats about Combat Arms since its US launch:

Over 3.2 billion soldiers have been killed in action.

Over 517 million of those casualties were caused by headshots

27 million Nutshots have been inflicted since April Fool's Day 2009.

Over one million games played per day since launching last July.

Over 154 million terrorists have been eliminated since Fireteam Mode was released at the end of May 2009.

Over 35 million flags have been captured.

Over four million bombs have been planted of which three million have exploded.

Over 180,000 clans have been created.

Soldiers have earned over 25 billion EXP. If one player had this much experience, he or she would have earned the game's top rank, General of the Army, over 3000 times.

Soldiers have earned 66 billion GP, which is enough to buy every weapon and piece of gear from the shop to last many lifetimes.

Nexon has added a lot of content to the game since its launch including 10 new maps, four new gameplay modes and over 100 weapons and items. Oh, and the Nutshot; can't forget that.

As we reported a few days ago, Nexon is set to update their free-to-play FPS Combat Arms with a new co-op themed mode called Fireteam. We now have some more info on that mode along with some screenshots which we have added to our Combat Arms gallery.

Nexon has also released more info on the mode itself. Players will have to deal with hordes of AI enemies as they try to infiltrate the area in the map, grab some intelligence data and maybe even rescue another military team. The mode comes with an all new map made especially for Fireteam mode, three difficulty settings (Normal, Hard and Extreme) and support for four, six or eight players.
%Gallery-39501%

Naturally another team is trying their best to make that not happen. Combat Arms launched last September and since then Nexon says they has registered two million players. The subject of microtransactions has long been a point of contention. Not only do some people feel that the practice somehow lessens a game's worth, they consider the very act to be malicious in nature. Other people seem to be welcoming the idea with open arms, and more and more game developers are redoubling their efforts in North America and Europe. The reason? Getting hit in the nuts isn't just for AFV anymore, as free online FPS Combat Arms has recently employed such a technique. Whenever a male player is shot, uh, down there, the words "Nut Shot" will appear at the top of the screen, next to a pair of shattered walnuts. Min Kim, director of Nexon America, told MTV Multiplayer that including this helps the game stand out from all of the other FPS titles on the market, allowing Combat Arms to be more "Jackie Chan" than "Bruce Lee," with the latter being used to label your more traditional FPS games such as Call of Duty and Counter Strike.

If you're playing a female character, however, you're immune to the Nut Shot ... for obvious reasons. And if you're already playing as a dude, well, it's possible to change genders in the game. If Nexon doesn't come up with a female equivalent, we expect most players will stick to being girls.

We've always laughed when certain lawyers or politcians have tried to push the theory that first person shooter games are "murder simulators" simply because playing a game with a mouse-keyboard combo or a gamepad can't possibly be the same as shooting an actual firearm. However a newly revealed study now claims playing such games can improve a person's vision.

Reuters reports that the study by the University of Rochester in New York showed that after playing games like Call of Duty 2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 gamers "saw significant improvements in their ability to notice subtle differences in shades of gray." That could help them when they drive at night. So perhaps getting a "nut shot" in Combat Arms can actually help your vision in real life, if not your aim.

In fact Nexon released a press release promoting the new feature in the game. The release states, "Female characters who succeed in unloading a Nut Shot giggle at their accomplishment, while male characters laugh heartily after hitting the target." If you are a player who has a female character in the game, don't worry; you can't have a "nut shot" happen to you.
